Darcy followed Malcolm as his cousin hurried up to his chambers, where he called for his writing desk. Provided with ink, paper, pens, and sand, he began to write to his parents. With Darcy’s prompting, he wrote the details of Darcy’s suspicions and Elizabeth’s memories, such as they were. He explained his invitation to the Windhams and the visit to Mr. Bennet. He recounted Uncle Windham’s acceptance and their intention to take Ellie home to Oakleigh, asking his parents to remain in the country rather than travel on to London as had been their plan. Lastly, he teased them that they would have to relate the news of William’s betrothal to his father’s sister, Lady Catherine De Bourgh. Darcy rolled his eyes.

“Tell your father he must keep Aunt Catherine away,” he warned. “We would not wish to have her insult the Windhams.” Malcolm nodded and bent his head over the paper.

Darcy’s Aunt Catherine had long desired a union between William and her daughter Anne, but Anne had set her cap at the less wealthy second son of a baronet for nearly as long. Perhaps now she would be allowed to admit him as a suitor.

Malcolm filled several pages with the story, then copied it over with a few adjustments for his wife, along with the date of his intended return to town and their newly arranged trip to Matlock. Other than that final letter, he handed them to Darcy.

These missives completed, Malcolm drew a clean sheet of paper to him.

Darcy watched Malcolm hesitate. They had not heard from Richard since the battle at Arroyo dos Molinos in October, but the colonel was due for his leave—the entire regiment was to return to England for six months. They had all assured themselves that Richard was merely traveling and had not been able to write. It had happened before.

Malcolm dipped his pen in the inkwell and wait until a drop of ink nearly spoiled the paper. He tapped the pen against the glass edge of the well and sighed before turning to Darcy.

“I have long wished to write this letter, but now that the time has come, I know not what to say.”

Darcy nodded. Richard had always taken Ellie’s loss so personally, even more so than Malcolm or himself. It was a rage inside him that burned so hot it was astonishing he had not taken down the entire French army himself. Perhaps now he would forgive himself. Perhaps now . . . the words apparently came, for Malcolm began to write.

Later, Darcy would wonder if the words were enough, but Malcolm had insisted upon them.

Put down your sword, brother, and return to us. Darcy has found Ellie Windham.
